Heme & RAGE: A new opportunistic relationship?
نویسندگان
چکیده
Heme is an iron-containing complex involved in fundamental cellular functions including oxygen transport. Free heme accumulation blood, during intravascular hemolysis and other pathological conditions, triggers vascular dysfunction, pro-inflammatory, prothrombotic cascade. Studies by May et al present a novel finding that ligand for RAGE binds to the V domain of induces oligomerization. Furthermore, they show vivo consequences heme–RAGE interaction lead pro-inflammatory procoagulant phenotype lungs. This discovery as sets stage probing role homeostasis pathogenic hemolytic diseases.

Opportunistic pricing: a new scourge, a new call for action.
A new obstacle for HIV-infected people is the rising cost of anti-HIV drugs. Some manufacturers are pricing drugs, based on market demand, not production costs. Over time this practice may put many important drugs out of the reach of federally funded programs, and increase concerns about public money earmarked for AIDS. AZT (Zidovudine, Retrovir), was initially marketed at a high price, but the...
متن کاملBIONETS: a New Vision of Opportunistic Networks
Most wireless networks are built around an infrastructure, where all communications are routed through base stations that act as gateways between the wireless and wired network. However, there may be situations in which it is impossible or not economically viable to build such an infrastructure. In these cases, a collection of wireless mobile nodes could self-organize into a temporary ad hoc ne...
متن کاملPhosphatidylserine receptors: what is the new RAGE?
the recognition of apoptotic cells by phagocytes is a complex, yet highly orchestrated event. Many receptors have been identified that recognize phosphatidylserine (pS; Fig 1)—which is exposed on early apoptotic cells—leading to downstream signalling and apoptotic cell engulfment. in this issue of EMBo reports, the receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (ragE) is described as a new pS rece...
متن کاملSoluble RAGE: a hot new biomarker for the hot joint?
The receptor for advanced glycation endproducts (RAGE) interacts with distinct ligand families linked to the inflammatory response. Studies in animal models suggest that RAGE is upregulated in the inflamed joint and that blockade of the receptor, using a ligand decoy soluble form of RAGE (sRAGE), attenuates joint inflammation and expression of inflammatory and tissue-destructive mediators. In t...
متن کاملA new understanding on how heme metabolism occurs in heme oxygenase: water-assisted oxo mechanism.
Heme metabolism by heme oxygenase (HO) is investigated with quantum mechanical/molecular mechanical (QM/MM) calculations. A mechanism assisted by water is proposed: (1) an iron-oxo species and a water molecule are generated by the heterolytic cleavage of the O-O bond of an iron-hydroperoxo species in a similar way to P450-mediated reactions, (2) a hydrogen atom abstraction by the iron-oxo speci...
